Landman Season 3 Production Quietly Gets Disappointing New Update From Billy Bob Thornton

Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris in Landman season 2

Landman may still be pumping oil, but Billy Bob Thornton has revealed that season 3 isn’t gushing forward anytime soon.

Starring Billy Bob Thornton as the titular landman, Tommy Norris, the Paramount+ series ended its second season earlier this year in January 2026, but long before that, Landman season 3 was renewed in December 2025, which was originally expected to start filming this month, May 2026. Now, just as production was gearing up, Billy Bob Thornton has delivered a discouraging update.

During an appearance on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast, Billy Bob Thornton revealed that Landman season 3 will start filming “at the end of August,” meaning that production is beginning a bit later than expected. Watch the portion of the video below, with Billy Bob Thornton’s comments coming at the very end of the interview:

Previous reports indicated a May filming start, with star Sam Elliott teasing that Landman season 3 is expected to begin filming in April or May 2026:

“I’m excited to see what unfolds in [Landman] season 3. I mean, we’re talking about season 2, but that’s backstory for us at this point. We’re all kind of looking toward to April and May when we start shooting season 3.”

However, last week, one of the show’s directors and executive producers Stephen Kay said that Landman season 3 should start filming in about a month, stating that “we’re cutting while we’re shooting and so it’ll hopefully be out soon,” which could mean a late 2026 release or early 2027. In turn, the exact timeline for season 3 remains unclear.

Created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, inspired by the Boomtown podcast hosted by the latter, Landman follows Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, a petroleum landman and an executive at the M-Tex Oil company, set within the world of oilfields in West Texas.

Landman‘s cast also includes Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, Andy Garcia, Jacob Lofland, Paulina Chavez, Kayla Wallace, Sam Elliot, Colm Feore, James Jordan, Mark Collie, Mustafa Speaks, and Caleb Martin – who are all expected to reprise their roles in season 3.

That delay may sting for fans hoping to head back to West Texas sooner rather than later, but it also clears up the growing confusion around Landman season 3’s production schedule. If filming really begins in late August, cameras could keep rolling well into winter, making an early 2027 premiere feel far more realistic than a rushed return later this year.
