Mariah Carey has been brutally roasted online over her MTV Video Music Awards performance, with users slamming her for doing the ‘bare minimum’ on stage.
The singer, 56, was presented with the Video Vanguard Award during the 2025 VMAs during the star-studded event.
Dressed in a sparkly gold body suit, she performed a medley of her hits afterwards, including Sugar Sweet, Fantasy, Honey, Obsessed, and It’s Like That.
But the hitmaker was mocked on social media afterwards, as hordes of fans felt her performance was lackluster.
Many X users called her out for seeming ‘stiff’ and walking extremely slowly around the stage, while others accused her of lip syncing.
‘Mariah Carey being introduced as the queen of vocals and she’s just lip syncing…’ one user wrote.

‘Mariah Carey doing the least possible movement,’ noted another.
‘Mariah stay giving us the bare minimum,’ penned someone else.
‘Mariah out here all stiff and s**t… Girl if you got back problems tell ’em you can’t perform…’ read a fourth tweet.
A fifth said, ‘Mariah just existing on stage.’
‘Mariah don’t be moving at all,’ scathed a different person.
Before the performance, Ariana Grande presented Mariah with her award.
‘I can’t believe I’m getting my first VMA tonight,’ the singer said afterwards, before jokingly asking MTV, ‘What were you waiting for?’
Earlier in the night, Mariah also won the R&B VMA for Type Dangerous.

This is not the first time the famed singer has been called out for a low-energy performance.
In February, fans expressed concerns for Mariah over videos of the singer’s Las Vegas shows, in which she could be seen moving slowly around the stage.
The videos prompted some fans to question whether she was in pain and some even wondered whether the clip was from a dress rehearsal rather than a real performance.
It comes weeks after Mariah blasted the Grammys following years of being snubbed out of nominations.
The Always Be My Baby hitmaker appeared on Pitchfork’s Over/Under YouTube series where celebrities weigh in on pop culture symbols including Labubus, Crocs, and Christmas.
When the topic of the biggest award show in music came up, Mariah pulled no punches as she said: ‘Ha, I think the Grammys are overrated.’
Mariah went on to clarify that she meant that both the award show and the award itself were overrated.
She didn’t fully turn into her bitterness as she added: ‘But we love everybody.’
