As “American Idol” winner Jamal Roberts celebrates being a “girl dad for life” on social media, cherishing time at home with his daughters, many fans are clamoring to know his relationship status.

On May 31, 2025, the P.E. teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, posted an Instagram photo at home with his daughters — Harmoni, 6, Lyrik, 4, and newborn Gianna, who arrived a week before his May 18 “American Idol” win — and wrote, “Just me and my girls 😍😩😭 I’ll let you take the picture 😎#girldadforlife”

Fans immediately flooded the comment section, praising Roberts for being such a present father but also wondering about the other half of the parenting equation, including one fan who wrote, “When are you going to introduce the wonderful momma of these three beautiful girls God blessed you with? ❤️”

Although Roberts hasn’t addressed the rampant questions on social media, he did set the record straight during press interviews on May 29, making it clear that he is not married and not in a relationship, either.

Roberts set the record straight on his relationship status during several radio interviews in Atlanta, including on V-103’s “The Big Tigger Morning Show” hosted by Darian “Big Tigger” Morgan and Jazzy McBee.

When Morgan asked Roberts what it was like for his family to witness him winning “American Idol,” Roberts replied, “Oh man, it was amazing. I was upset I couldn’t be there with my baby girl when she was born, but that just gave me that … little push I needed, you know?”

Roberts announced Gianna’s birth on “American Idol,” telling producers he kept her impending arrival a secret because “it was so personal to me.” He didn’t get to meet the baby until his hometown visit as part of the top 3.

“But I was so ready to get home and see her,” he told the radio hosts, adding, “That’s all I was thinking about when I was up there. Like, ‘I just had another girl!’ I’m a girl dad now, you know. She was the first (birth) I missed ’cause I usually be in there, you know, wide open. But it served a purpose and I’m doing this for my girls.”

McBee then asked Roberts, “What did wifey say while she was having a baby? Did she give you encouragement to say, ‘Hey stay there, I’m good, I’ll do it by myself?’ What was her reaction like?”

Holding up his hands to show he had no wedding ring, Roberts laughed, “Wifey, uh, didn’t give me any comments because…”

Looking surprised, McBee laughed, “Okay, so the mother of your child — what did she, oh Lord, what did she say?”

Grinning widely, Roberts replied, “Okay, she told me to focus and keep doing what I’m doing. I told her I’d do that.”

In another interview on the nationally syndicated “Morning Hustle” radio show with Kyle Santillian and Lore’l, Roberts also clarified that not only is he not married, but he’s also not in a relationship.

When Lore’l said Roberts was married, the soul singer was quick to hold up his hands again and said, “I’m not married.”

Shocked, she replied, “Wait a minute! Okay! So, I’ve been seeing –” and Roberts interjected, explaining why she might have seen a ring on his hand while he was on “American Idol.”

“I’m a coach and I play basketball all the time, that’s how I do my cardio, and I jam all my fingers on this side,” he explained, holding up his right hand. “So one night … during the performance, I accidentally wore one of the rings from wardrobe on my ring finger and they let me know when I got off stage. I said, ‘They going to think I’m married!’”

“Yeah I thought you were,” Lore’l exclaimed and Roberts told her, “I’m a father of three beautiful girls that I love. Yeah. That’s it.”

“Same woman?” Lore’l inquired, and Roberts replied, “No.”

Noting that she’d seen reports of Roberts being with a woman who just didn’t want to be in the spotlight, Lore’l asked, “So, are you single?”

Nodding emphatically, Roberts said, “I am very much single. Very much single.”

“You’ve got a brand new baby,” Lore’l laughed, adding, “So you’ve been busy in Mississippi.”

As Roberts grinned and nodded, everyone in the “Morning Hustle” studio burst into laughter and Santillian said, “That’s got to be tough to manage.”

Roberts replied matter-of-factly, “You’ve got to be from Mississippi, you handle all the things, you keep everything handled.”

Santillian then asked if there had been any problems with Roberts and his kids’ moms, given that he’d been gone for so long filming “American Idol” and is now plotting tours and appearances. Roberts told him, “Oh no, I have no problems in no areas of my life when it comes to my kids. I’ve been a present father since they were … pregnant. I’ve been present.”

“I have no problems,” he continued. “They don’t question me about anything. I’m always there for my kids. Anytime they need something, I’m there, it does not matter.”

Roberts noted that he was relieved when his two older girls were able to visit him during his run on “American Idol, brought to Los Angeles by his mom and other family members,

He explained, “It felt better because I feel like I’m the only person that can make sure they’re safe all the time and, you know, when when I can see them and I can lay eyes on them, I feel like they’re just in the perfect spot and I’m at ease. But when they’re away, I just, I’m uneasy. I’m like, ‘Oh, God.’”

Roberts, whose first single “Heal” debuted on the Billboard Top 10 Digital Song chart, will perform a hometown concert on May 31 in Meridian. He has said in several Facebook Live sessions with fans that he has lots of shows and projects in the works — including a collaboration with Jelly Roll — but can’t share details until it’s all confirmed “in writing.”
