Legendary announcer and longtime close friend of Steve Austin, Jim Ross, once revealed that the Texas Rattlesnake wasn’t particularly fond of the idea of facing Hulk Hogan, primarily due to stylistic differences in the ring.

According to Ross, Austin believed their contrasting in-ring styles wouldn’t mesh well, and he wasn’t confident the match would live up to the enormous expectations set by fans. Jim Ross shared:

Austin had it in his mind that Hogan’s style and Austin’s style were oil and water. He just didn’t feel the chemistry. Austin was never about having good matches. Austin was about having great matches. He knew better than anybody else in the world who he could work the best with. Hogan wasn’t on that list. 

Jim Ross acknowledged that Steve Austin could have been mistaken in his assessment. He clarified that he wasn’t implying Hogan and Austin couldn’t have delivered a great match, pointing out Hogan’s memorable bout with The Rock at WrestleMania 18 as an example.

Ross explained that Austin was a stubborn individual who simply didn’t feel confident about the matchup. He added that, during meetings with the talent, the message being conveyed was that there was a new top star in WWE, and that star was Stone Cold Steve Austin.
