Doja Cat left fans grossed out as she performed a shocking act on the red carpet at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night.

Rocking a funky 80s-inspired look, the Grammy Award-winning hitmaker, 29, undoubtedly turned heads upon her arrival at the starry event in New York City.

But it was her bizarre stunt in front of red carpet cameras that really sent MTV viewers into a frenzy.

While playfully applying red lipstick to her plump pout, Doja stunned photographers when she suddenly took a bite out of the makeup product and began to eat it.

The busty starlet continued to pose for photos while chewing and holding onto the half-eaten lipstick tube.

Fans of the Kiss Me More singer flocked to social media to react to her ‘insane’ act, with many left completely shocked by what they’d just witnessed on live TV.

‘THE WAY SHE ATE THE LIPSTICK OMG,’ read one tweet on X (formerly Twitter) as footage of Doja eating her lipstick began to go viral.

Another added: ‘girl why is u eating lipstick [crying emoji]’

Unsure if Doja had taken a bite out of an actual lipstick tube or an edible prop, one concerned fan tweeted out: ‘Isn’t this… unhealthy? Plz don’t do this at home’

However, many of Doja’s devout fans showered her with praise for pushing the envelope on one of the music industry’s biggest nights.

One fan joked, ‘a queen never goes hungry.’

Another referred to Doja’s lipstick chow down as a ‘tasty fashion statement.’

Some declared the moment ‘iconic’ while others were left convinced that it was Doja’s way of teasing her rumored upcoming single, Lipstain.

One tweet read: ‘doja cat eating lipstick is an iconic lipstain tease’

Speaking with the Daily Mail, body language expert Judi James – who has teamed up with Casino.ca – observed Doja appeared to have a look of ‘distaste’ as she bit into the makeup.

‘She performed a “hold my mic” gesture,’ Judi said of Doja as the pop singer handed her lipstick purse to someone off-camera before applying her lip tint to her pout.

‘Instead of applying it though she pushed it into her mouth and, with her lips pulled back in what looked like distaste, she bit through the actual lipstick, chewed it and literally ate it. This gesture is something of a horror for most women who would see it as a “bad dream” moment.’

For the awards ceremony, Doja — who is among the night’s A-list performers — slipped into a custom off-the-shoulder Balmain frock with a dangerously low neckline.

The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards are being held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

No doubt all eyes will be on Lady Gaga as she is making her long-awaited return to the award show after a five-year absence.

The 39-year-old music superstar is up for the most awards of the night as she was nominated for 12 including top honor Video Of The Year for her duet with Bruno Mars titled Dying With A Smile.

Gaga already has 18 VMA wins under her belt and her fans are anticipating her to add even more accolades this year.

This year also marks the third time that Gaga led MTV’s list of VMA nominees.

She previously topped the list with 13 nods in 2010 and again in 2020 tying for first with nine total nominations.

The Bad Romance hitmaker is followed by her collaborator Bruno Mars who has 11 nominations and Kendrick Lamar has the third most nominations with ten.

Taylor Swift did not release a single or album in the last year so she is only up for one award in the Artist Of The Year category.

Last week Gaga – born  Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta – announced that she would also be returning to the stage for a performance.

She will be joining the highly anticipated lineup including Doja Cat, Mariah Carey, Jelly Roll, Sabrina Carpenter, Post Malone, Tate McRae and J Balvin among many more.

The last time Gaga performed at the VMAs, she took the stage with Ariana Grande to perform their chart-topping dance-pop collaboration, Rain On Me, in 2020.

Presenters for the event include the likes of Ciara, Ashlee Simpson Ross, Drew Barrymore, Jessica Simpson, Nikki Glaser, Paris Hilton, Livvy Dunne, and Ice Spice.

Rapper and actor LL Cool J is host of the event which will air for the first time on major network CBS as it will also stream on the premium tier of Paramount+ and simulcast on MTV.
