RZA has shared that he would love for Rihanna and ASAP Rocky to continue the tradition of naming their children after Wu Tang-Clan members.

While the couple took a detour in naming their second child, Riot Rose, 1, their first child, RZA Athelaston Mayers, 3, is named after Wu-Tang’s de facto leader.

The hip-hop-inspired names are a tradition for Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, named after pioneering MC Rakim. The name of his younger sister, Erica B. Mayers, pulls from Rakim’s DJ and producer Eric B.

While attending the Nobody 2 premiere on Monday (August 11), the first RZA was asked by People which Wu-Tang member RiRi and Rocky’s next child should be named after.

“You know what? OBD, because you know the legend must live on,” RZA said about his late cousin and rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

While fans wait to see if the couple names their third child after Dirt McGirt, RZA told CNN in 2023 that it was a “great honor” for little RZA to carry his name.

“RZA isn’t only a name, it’s a title. So it’s an honor and I salute her and ASAP and their family. All the blessings in the world from me,” the artist said.

Upon baby RZA’s first birthday, Rihanna and Rocky threw him a Wu-Tang-themed bash, with the nine-time Grammy winner dressed as ODB.

In May, ahead of the 2025 Met Gala, RiRi was photographed arriving at her hotel in a gray Miu Miu look complete with a growing baby bump that was partially covered with a brown fur scarf.

ASAP Rocky later confirmed on the red carpet at the Met Gala that he and the singer were in fact expecting their third child.

A Family Story Told Through Names

Beyond Rihanna’s decision to have multiple children close in age, another detail caught fans’ attention worldwide: the names she and A$AP Rocky chose for their children. Their first son, born in 2022, was named RZA Athelston Mayers—a direct tribute to the legendary rapper RZA, leader of the Wu-Tang Clan, and a nod to hip-hop’s deep cultural legacy.

The choice wasn’t just trendy or eccentric. It was symbolic. By naming their son after an iconic figure, Rihanna and Rocky were weaving their love story and their cultural roots into their children’s identities. RZA himself responded with joy, publicly praising the gesture and calling it an honor to see his name live on in the next generation.

Music fans quickly drew parallels between RZA’s baby name and Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s legacy, as A$AP Rocky has long been vocal about his admiration for ODB’s wild energy and fearless artistry. For many, it was a reminder that Rihanna and Rocky are not just building a family—they’re building a cultural dynasty that bridges their personal lives with the history of hip-hop.

In this way, the couple’s children become part of something bigger than celebrity gossip. They symbolize a fusion of music, resilience, and heritage. Just as Rihanna’s personal mission is to protect her children from loneliness, the names they carry are a promise: a reminder of where they come from, and of the artistic spirit their parents hope to pass on.
