Princess Diana’s death in a car crash in Paris in 1997 remains shrouded in mystery due to a longstanding French code that seals sensitive information until 2082.
We’ve been waiting over 25 years to discover the truth about Princess Diana’s death, and that wait will continue for a long time. A longstanding French code is to blame for that, one which demands sensitive information such as this remain sealed.
The Princess was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997 along with her companion Dodi Al Fayed and their driver Henri Paul. Following an 18-month investigation by French police into the tragedy, a 6,000-page dossier was completed in 2007. It’s a big mystery as to what that file contains.

Conspiracy theories were flying all over when the Princess died. We won’t be getting any more concrete answers to our questions. The dossier completed by police is stored in the basement archives of the Palais de Justice in the French capital. It is guarded by armed officers.
Unsealing those files is a lengthy and complicated process. When it comes to the documents sealed under French code L213-2, “it cannot be consulted before the expiration of a period of 75 years,” a source tells RadarOnline.
That means we won’t know exactly what that document contains or possibly reveals until 2082 at the earliest. Even then, though, we might not get the answers we seek. “French authorities can extend the restriction indefinitely,” the source adds.
The crash which took Diana’s life might never have happened had proper precautions been taken, according to her former aide, Patrick Jephson. He says that BBC journalist Martin Bashir giving the late Princess false information drove a wedge between them.
The dossier compiled by 30 police officers reportedly consists of close to 200 witness statements and a toxicology report on the driver. There are also apparently unseen crash-scene photos and interviews. In 2006, French authorities revealed that photos showing Dodi and Diana at the crash scene had disappeared weeks before a $17 million British inquest was to take place.
For now, the tragedy is attributed to negligent driving and Dodi and Diana not wearing their seatbelts. Bodyguard Trevor-Rees Jones survived, suffering catastrophic injuries as a result.
